LOSING YOUR WINDOW
2021
Wood, found windows, found wood, LED tubes, incandescent bulbs, soil, mum flowers, light organ.
Commissioned by Opera Southwest and Chatter ABQ as a set for Lohengrin by Salvatore Sciarrino. This opera focuses on the mental health of the Main Character Elsa from Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin. Using this as a prompt to use my personal experience with Mental health, I recreated my Mother’s bedroom with forced perspective that focuses on the sculpture in the back of the room. This Sculpture represents the mental illness and is based on a drawing my mother did when she first hit her head, and really started to declining mentally. This sculpture flickers throughout the installation always present but not always in focus. Much like mental health in society today.
